Alligator in the Nile

Teaching Steps

Introduce a new teaching step only when your students have mastered the others. You may not get through all these steps in one workshop. This song can be done standing or sitting down. Try mixing it up each time you work on it.

  1. Teach line 1 in solfa or using a neutral syllable like “ba”. Use Curwen hand signs or your own improvised gestures to help students follow the melody.
  2. Chant the words of line 1 while doing the actions:
    • Snap hands = imitate a crocodile/alligator with the hands opening and closing from the base of the palms.
    • Sway = sway side to side to the beat with the hands up in an “I don’t know” gesture.
  3. Chant the words of line 2 while doing the actions:
    • Hands over face = as if playing peek-a-boo, open and close the hands on your face to indicate fear.
  4. Put the words and melody together using the hand signs or improvised gestures from step 1.
  5. Sing line 1 and 2 with the actions.
  6. Choose one student to be the gatorcroc and have everyone walk around the room while singing the song. During the “Either way we’ll need a doc!” section, the gatorcroc chooses a student by tapping them on the shoulder and they are the next gatorcroc.
  7. Teach line 3 in solfa or using a neutral syllable like “ba”. Use Curwen hand signs or your own improvised gestures to help students follow the melody.
  8. Go back and forth between line 1 and line 3 to practise finding the raised/flattened notes.
  9. Chant the words of line 3 while doing the actions:
    • Snap hands = imitate a crocodile/alligator with the hands opening and closing from the base of the palms.
    • Sway = sway side to side to the beat with the hands up in an “I don’t know” gesture.
  10. Chant the words of line 4 while doing the actions.
    • Hands over face = as if playing peek-a-boo, open and close the hands on your face to indicate fear.
  11. Put the words and melody together using the hand signs or improvised gestures from step 1.
  12. Sing the full song with the actions.
  13. Choose one student to be the gatorcroc and another to be the cattermill. Have everyone walk around the room while singing the song (if you wish, you can play the piano accompaniment). During the “Either way we’ll need a doc!” section, the gatorcroc chooses a student by tapping them on the shoulder and they are the next gatorcroc. During the “Oh it’s just a clothes peg!” section the cattermill chooses a student by tapping them on the shoulder and they are the next cattermill.
