Practice

Teaching Steps

Introduce a new teaching step only when your students have mastered the others. You may not get through all these steps in one workshop. This song can be done standing or sitting down. Try mixing it up each time you work on it.

  1. Teach your students the “I practise ev’ry day” chant in the rhythm pattern shown on the score (the middle line of the score.) When they’re ready, you can add the actions:
    • Right = tap lap with right hand
    • Left = tap lap with left hand
    • Head = touch head
  2. Explain how the “part 1” version of this chant (the top line of the score) starts with a whole rest.
  3. Point to each student around the circle saying “Go, rest, go, rest…” to assign a chant to each student. Count in so they all start together. Swap roles so everyone gets a chance to do both chants.
  4. Repeat this combination but tell all students they must think the word “practise” when they get to it instead of saying it aloud.
  5. Teach your students the “I make mistakes” chant in the rhythm pattern shown on the score (the bottom line of each system.) When they’re ready, you can add the actions:
    • Chest = tap chest with both hands
    • Click = click/snap fingers or tap knuckles on the floor
  6. Point to each student around the circle saying “Mistakes, practise, mistakes, practise…” to assign a chant to each student. Count in so that they all start together. Swap roles so everyone gets a chance to do both chants.
  7. Point to each student around the circle saying “Rest, practise, mistakes, rest, practise, mistakes…” to assign a chant to each student. Count in so that they all start together. Swap roles so everyone gets a chance to do all 3 chants.
  8. Repeat the 3-part combination but tell the students they must think the word “practise” and the word “mistakes” when they get to it instead of saying it aloud.
