Toes and Nose

Teaching Steps

Introduce a new teaching step only when your students have mastered the others. You may not get through all these steps in one workshop.

  1. Standing in a circle, teach your students the “Beat in my…” chant. Add the actions when they’re ready:
    • Toes = touch feet
    • Nose = touch nose
    • Wrists = tap wrists together
    • Fists = taps fists together
    • Hips = sway hips
    • Cross = make X shape with arms
  2. Sitting in a circle, teach your students the “Rhythm is a…” chant (the bottom line of each system.) Patsch (tap lap) along with the lyrics.
  3. Point to each student around the circle saying “Beat, rhythm, beat, rhythm…” to assign a chant to each student. Those who are doing the rhythm should sit down, and those doing the beat should stand. Count in so that they start together. Swap roles so that they get to try both chants.
  4. Repeat the combination but tell the students they should think the words “rhythm” and “beat” instead of saying them out loud.
  5. Standing in a circle, teach your students the “Rhythm patterns…” chant (the top line of each system.) Tap the floor in time with the words.
  6. Point to each student around the circle saying “Beat, lap rhythm, floor rhythm, beat, lap rhythm, floor rhythm…” to assign a chant to each student. Those who are doing a “rhythm” chant should sit down and those doing the “beat” chant should stand. Count in so that they start together. Swap roles so that they get to try both chants.
  7. Repeat the combination but tell the students they should think the words “rhythm” and “beat” instead of saying them out loud.
