Teaching Steps

Introduce a new teaching step only when your students have mastered the others. You may not get through all these steps in one workshop. This song can be done standing or sitting down. Try mixing it up each time you work on it.

  1. Teach line 1 in solfa or using a neutral syllable like “ba”. Use Curwen hand signs or your own improvised gestures to help students follow the melody.
  2. Have students sit in pairs, facing each other. Chant the words of lines 1 and 2 while doing the actions:
    • High five = tap both hands against partner’s hands
    • Point = point finger in air as if drawing a dot
    • Circle = circle the hands in front of you
  3. Put the words and melody of lines 1 and 2 together using the hand signs or improvised gestures from step one.
  4. Sing lines 1 and 2 with the actions.
  5. Teach the straight line variation with the action:
    • 2 points = point finger twice in air as if drawing the end dots of a line
  6. Sing lines 1 to 4 with the actions. On “in the air” students should change to a different partner.
  7. Teach the triangle variation with the action:
    • 3 points = point finger three times in air as if drawing a triangle
  8. Sing lines 1 to 6 with the actions. On “in the air” students should change to a different partner.
  9. Teach the nice rectangle variation with the action:
    • 4 points = point finger four times in air as if drawing a rectangle
  10. Sing the full song with the actions. On each “in the air” except the last one, students should change to a different partner.
