Teaching Steps

Introduce a new teaching step only when your students have mastered the others. You may not get through all these steps in one workshop. This song should be done sitting in a circle so that students can easily touch the floor.

  1. Teach line 2 in solfa or using a neutral syllable like “ba”. Use Curwen hand signs or your own improvised gestures to help students follow the melody.
  2. Chant the words of line 2 while doing the actions:
    • Patsch = tap alternating hands on lap.
    • High five = tap hands with both neighbours’ hands.
    • Head = touch head.
    • Floor = touch floor.
    • Sky = reach upwards.
  3. Teach line 1 in solfa or using a neutral syllable like “ba”. Use Curwen hand signs or your own improvised gestures to help students follow the melody.
  4. Chant the words of line 1 while doing the actions:
    • Sway = sway side to side to the beat with hands on each other’s shoulders.
  5. Put the words and melody of line 2 together using the hand signs or improvised gestures from step 1.
  6. Put the words and melody of line 1 together using hand signs or improvised gestures.
  7. Sing line 1 and 2 with the actions.
  8. Choose one student to be the sailboat and have them walk around the circle while everyone is singing the song. During the “Sail away now” section, the sailboat chooses a student by tapping them on the shoulder. The chosen student gets up and walks around until it’s time to choose the next sailboat.
  9. Teach line 4 in solfa or using a neutral syllable like “ba”. Use Curwen hand signs or your own improvised gestures to help students follow the melody.
  10. Go back and forth between line 2 and line 4 to practise finding the raised/flattened note.
  11. Chant the words of line 4 while doing the actions.
  12. Teach line 3 in solfa or using a neutral syllable like “ba”. Use Curwen hand signs or your own improvised gestures to help students follow the melody.
  13. Go back and forth between line 1 and line 3 to practise finding the raised/flattened note.
  14. Chant the words of line 3 while doing the actions:
    • Waves = hold hands with neighbours and raise and lower them on the beat.
  15. Put the words and melody of lines 3 and 4 together using hand signs or gestures.
  16. Sing the full song with the actions.
  17. Choose one student to be the sailboat and have them walk around the circle while everyone is singing the song. The sailboat should tap students on the shoulder at different points throughout the song. If they tap someone during the “Sail away now” section, that student gets up and walks around until it’s time to choose the next sailboat. (Students tapped during the rest of the song should ignore the sailboat.)
