Forte Piano

Teaching Steps

Introduce a new teaching step only when your students have mastered the others. You may not get through all these steps in one workshop.

  1. Standing in a circle, teach your students to chant “Forte, piano, loudly, and softly”. You may like to practise with rhythm syllables or counting at first to get used to the alternating patterns. Add the actions when they’re ready.
  2. Sitting in a circle, teach your students to chant “Piano, forte, careful soft, now loud”. You may like to practise with rhythm syllables or counting at first to get used to the alternating patterns. Add the actions when they’re ready:
    • Patsch = lap tap with both hands
    • Belly = tap belly
  3. Point to each student around the circle saying “Stand, sit, stand, sit…” to decide which chant they will do. Count in so that they start together. Swap roles so that they get to try both chants.
  4. Repeat the combination but tell all students they must say the word loudly or softly depending on what it means.
  5. Standing in a circle, teach your students the “Pianissimo…” chant. Add the actions when they’re ready.
  6. Point to each student around the circle saying “Stand, sit, centre, stand, sit, centre,…” to decide which chant they will do first. The students you say “centre” to will make a tighter circle in the middle so they can low and high five easily. Count in so that they start together. Swap roles so that they get to try all 3 chants.
  7. Repeat the combination but tell all students they must say the word loudly or softly depending on what it means.
