Introduce a new teaching step only when your students have mastered the others. You may not get through all these steps in one workshop. This song can be done standing or sitting down. Try mixing it up each time you work on it.
Chant the words of line 1 while clapping or patsching (lap-tap) the macro beat.
Teach line 1 in solfa or using a neutral syllable like “ba”. Use Curwen hand signs or your own improvised gestures to help students follow the melody.
Put the words and melody of line 1 together.
Chant lines 2 and 3 while whispering the micro beats and doing the actions:
Ouch! = touch knees 6 times and say, “Ouch! 2 3 4 5 6”
Yikes! = tap waist 6 times and say, “Yikes! 2 3 4 5 6”
Oops! = touch shoulders 6 times and say, “Oops! 2 3 4 5 6”
Eep! = slide voice from high to low note for across the full bar (measure) and reach up to the sky and then down to the floor
Wait = tap fingers on lips and whisper, “Wait 2 3 4 5 6”
During the rests use your arms to show slowly breathing in and out and then tap temples on the macrobeat to get ready for the repeat.
Choose one student to be the leader. Sing the song together and follow whatever actions they choose during line 2.
Ask for suggestions of other common mistakes and compose new lyrics together.
