Teacher turnover tends to be quite high. This is natural in an industry like ours where many do this as a side job alongside gigging, composing or other musical pursuits.
Hopefully the interview process you developed will mean that teachers stay with you for at least a few years. But when it comes time to bid them adieu, make sure to leave it on a positive note.
Whether your mentee is moving on to another teaching position, starting their own business or changing directions entirely – their departure may sting a little. It’s natural to feel that way, but it’s not right to leave it on a sour note.
Put on your level-headed leader hat before they head off and have a final meeting together. Talk about what they’ve learned from the experience and make sure they know the lines of communication are always open if they need advice or guidance in the future.
